I purchased a new laptop,when I need to open attachments it keeps advising I need to purchase office of line,is that correct and is £70 a;fair price or are there any alternatives

Libre Office gets my vote.
Just amend the Save As settings to default to Microsoft Office standards to make life easier for yourself.0 -
You can download Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint readers from the Microsoft download site - do a search at http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/downloads/
If you sign up to Microsoft SkyDrive you can view/modify Word, Excel and Powerpoint in WebApps - http://skydrive.live.com - it's free and you get 7 GB of storage.
