Best way to strain yoghurt ?

Had a bit of success in straining a container of youghurt made in the Lakeland yoghurt maker . I did use a muslin but found it quite messy . And how long should I do it for ? , I think I did it for an hour and a half . Should it be longer and it only gave me half a container back .
Any tips ?

i've strained yoghurt though a coffee filter paper - put it in a sieve and rest the sieve over a bowl.

  • I use a men's cotton hankie (specially kept for the purpose) draped over a sieve. I usually leave it in the fridge over-night and if I really want to strain it well I fold the rest of the hankie over the top of the yoghurt and put a heavy plate on top. If you make bread - keep the liquid that falls through the sieve and add it to the flour instead of ordinary water - makes a yummy extra risen loaf!
  • I used a "permanent coffee filter", the one from my old drip machine which is sort of fabric mesh and plastic and put it over a glass jar and left it in the fridge to strain overnight.

Think I saw 3 hrs+ recommended depending on how thick you want it to be which would also impact on how much you would have of strained yoghurt.

That reminds me - OH wanted something to tie a new fruit tree to its stake. I gave him an old pair of tights expecting him to cut a strip off them - but no: we now have a pair of (laddered) tights on display to the entire neighbourhood:o
