Netbook doesn't readily recognise memory stick

I have two netbooks kept in different locations, a Sony Vaio and an Acer Aspire. I use a 2GB memory stick to update small Excel files between the two.
When I plug in the memory stick to the Vaio it instantly recognises it, but with the Acer there has always been up to a few minutes delay before it grudgingly appears in the "my computer" list.
Today it has still not been found in over half an hour. I've tried it in all the USB ports but zilch. I don't think it's the m/stick as it was fine yesterday in the Vaio. To the best of my (limited) knowledge, the computer's memory is far from full, so any suggestions as to what is wrong would be much appreciated. (I don't have another memory stick available to try out.)
Thanks for any help you can offer. It's driving me mad!

Okay give me some space.....go on, back out of the room.....I'm being serious......My Mind Reading Skills may cause magnetic energy unforeseen.....Here goes:
You are using Windows 7, correct?
WOH, I knew I'd get that one.....dead easy. Ok, this next one is a bit tricky......give me a minute.....hold on I see the number 3. No wait, its a 4.....I think you have four USB sockets. Was I right?
Phew.....I thought I was losing my powers there. Okay last one.....I see a Printer......No wait, it could be a Mouse......Hmmm! This one could have me stumped......
I am going to guess that you have a working printer and a working mouse that have both been tested on all usb sockets. If so, if those usb sockets worked with the printer and mouse plugged in am guessing it could be your usb stick. If the printer and mouse did not get recognised by the usb sockets then I would say Driver Problems.
Have a look in device manager for any yellow exclamation marks.
MORE INFO PLEASE - Did you safely remove the usb stick or did you just unplug it.....it might just need re-formatting (erasing).

Problem is I barely know what I'm talking about myself, but here goes...

Was I right? Well, there's two on the left, and something resembling one on the right, i.e. USB connectors fit into it, but I'm not sure that one isn't for some different connector. I've only ever used the two on the left, but on the basis of I'll try anything I plugged the stick into the right side one, but still nothing happened.
Phew.....I thought I was losing my powers there. Okay last one.....I see a Printer......No wait, it could be a Mouse......Hmmm! This one could have me stumped...... I don't have a mouse (touchpad only) and my printer is wifi. I do have a new laptop shelf with a fan, that I've just placed underneath the netbook, which is plugged into one of the ports, but I tried disconnecting that and still no joy. I had another one of these previously, which was going on the blink hence the replacement, so it's not a new concept for my machine, just a new appliance (make is Fellowes, if that is relevant).

There's no "safely remove hardware" icon on my taskbar tonight, although there usually is, so it seems it has completely ignored my stick. Hope I don't have to erase and re-save as there's stuff on there that I put on last week and I don't have a hard copy.

Thank you for being brave enough to offer your assistance! In the meantime since I posted, I've been checking out the facilities on Control Panel; Hardware & Sound; Add a device, but kept getting messages that I don't understand. Will re-create and post one here if it might help.
ETA: First I'm going to close everything down and re-boot. BRB...I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

YESSS that's done the trick :j. I do apologise for apparent time-wasting but I thought I'd tried everything... except the bleeping obvious!
Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply. I am always grateful when you kind people on this board help to sort out those of us who probably shouldn't even own a computer!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

What are the f***ing odds of that?......a wifi printer and touchpad :rotfl: I should play the lottery.....I will let you pick the numbersI'm bound to win :rotfl:
On a serious note: You should back up your data asap, perhaps onto your second netbook.
