Problems with Skype / webcam connections.

Has anyone else been having problems with Skype webcam connecting ?
We have been using skype free web cam video conversations with friends in Portugal for months but have recently had problems which we thought were their end as they couldn`t get any of their other contacts.
We have downloaded the newest version now and it worked for a couple of days but now is off again.
Today my son tried to set up a skype contact with me from London but yet again it kept saying Call failed or call dropped.
Any info on what might be wrong please.
