no sound youtube but iplayer fine?

hello can anyone help pls. i suddenly can't get sound on youtube or on embedded video in tedtalks etc, yet using iplayer is fine so my computer speakers aren't at fault. the speaker icon on youtube clip for example has an x beside it, but clicking on this icon does not work. i'm at a loss to understand!

    I had this problem a few month ago ,its something to do with flash player.My pc is OK now due to a recent update to a newer version of flash player .

    tks for replies. update adobe flash player on both browsers - ie and firefox and it had no effect. still soundless and still at a loss to know why this has suddenly occurred!!

    *** update - cleared cache and cookies and it now seems to be working. bizarre.
