the reality is do your job or go. You tell me why a caretaker cant clear snow on the weekend. Tell me why teachers or TA's cant come in 1 hour early and all clear a bit.
Thats what happens in works up and down the countries, that's what keeps businesses going. If any school is shut because their premises are full of snow then their head should be held to account. It is a situation that can be predicted and managed and it isnt acceptable for it not to be.0 -
When I was at school, I remember it closing just once in cold weather, and that was because the boiler broke, and it was freezing. The kids practically had to mutiny to get them to send us home, the teachers were all for keeping us there. But apart from that, we just used to walk to school in all weathers.
My husband is slightly older than me, and was at school in the bad winter of 1963. His school did close for a few weeks as the pipes were frozen. However, he had to walk to school every day to get his mark and walk home again.
There is a perception that schools close at the drop of a hat (or a snowflake) these days. I imagine its because many teachers don't live within walking distance of the school anymore. I seem to remember the majority of the teachers walked to school, like the kids.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Secondary schools around here are opening for public exams only. Messages on the websites saying if you don't turn up to do the public exam you will have to sit it in June!
We are just outside London and there has been about 4 inches of snow today on top of the 3-4 inches on Thurs&Friday. Some schools have pupils travelling 5-8 miles to get in. I feel very sorry for anyone who can't get in and has to retake in June. It would have been my DS this time last year and he'd carefully splits his A level papers between January and June, really would have effected his results had he had to sit more papers in June.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The issue round here isn't necessarily the school grounds but the ice rink of minor roads that lead to the school - pavements as well as actual roads. They are often lethal. We live on a huge hill, we have watched this evening as a van was pulled off a car on the corner as it is already exceedingly icy. The temperature is set to plummet tonight so the conditions aren't going to get any easier.
If the schools are open and public transport is running, my children will be attending school, but there is no way I am going to make them walk when they have to travel such a distance.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire
