Accidentally exceeded credit limit (by £1.70!) - consequences for credit file

Just looking for a bit of advice from folks who've been there or are in the know!

Long story short I logged onto my credit card account today and found I had exceeded my credit card limit by £1.70.

I accept this is totally my fault. The reason it happened is that the card has a very low limit (just £250) and I use it purely for cashback purposes (it's an Aqua card with 3% CB). As such I have to manage the spend very carefully but on this occasion I didn't do this closely enough and forgot about a transaction which took me over.

I've been charged a fee (£12) which I accept I must swallow and I've made a payment to clear the whole balance.

My question is whether this will lead to a black mark being put on my credit file? I've paid the balance off in advance of my next statement being generated so I'm wondering when/if this info still gets transferred to the credit agencies? Eg. if this sort of info is transferred in arrears won't my clearing the "debt" prevent it being reported?

I'm annoyed because hitherto I've had an unblemished credit record and so to blow it over £1.70 is a shame!

Any advice much appreciated but please don't flame me because I know it was my mistake to exceed the limit in the first place but it was a genuine mistake.

  • No it wont effect your credit rating as long as the bill has been paid

you will loose the cashback this year
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Pretty sure they let you off once without taking away cashback.

If you ring up and say you're sorry etc they'll probably give you the £12 fee back as it's your first time. You'd be able to clarify the cashback position with them then too

Its a subprime card, so dont count on it

  • Ask to make to make a small payment towards your balance to bring you back within your credit limit.

    Good luck!

I got Aqua too. I have been charged twice for windscreen replacement, so I've gone over limit, they have charged me, but I called them to refund it and they did. I have asked them about marker on my credit file and they said it would be ok.
Plus the company's gonna refund the second payment aswel.

Thanks to all for their advice.

I called Aqua and adopted a suitably humble and apologetic tone. To my surprise they waived the fee (I didn't have to ask), stated that a mark would not be left on my credit report and agreed to keep me in the cashback scheme. However I was told that any future transgressions would not be treated in the same way so will need to be ultra-careful in the future.

So the lessons learnt here are: if it's a genuine mistake, a relatively small amount and you make it good immediately then if you speak nicely to customer services you may get away with it! But I don't think you'll get away with it twice!

I really can't fault Aqua's customer service on this occasion - top notch! I didn't expect a sub-prime lender to be as accommodating to be honest.

thats good then, I would of expected them to riggle. They are taking over my debenhams card soon as was going to get rid for this reason.
