  • Is ALL the paperwork lost? You get a notification letter, but reminders to file a return and statements of account have it too.

    Lost your Number?

If you can not find any of the above documents which may show your UTR number you can always contact your local tax office. Most major cities have a tax office and you can use your phone book to find your closest or you can use this tax office locator.

Once you have found your local tax office, give them a call and have as much of your tax information to hand (such as national insurance number, date of birth, address etc). Your tax office will then be able to send you a reminder of your UTR number.

  • Contact your local HMRC who can give you the UTR

  • I have kept my original letter AND scanned it AND I have put the UTR on my tax return template spreadsheet.

He had all the paperwork but states he has never received anything? I had my personal tax form sent directly to my house along with NI payment letter.
I registered us as business partners under his name last year at his home address.

If he's lost his UTR has he also lost his Gateway ID and password to get onto the HMRC online assessment. He would need to contact HMRC for these again also.

Not quite as bad as that - simply use the 'lost user id' and 'lost password' option when attempting to log on.

The UTR is never requested on a self assessment online form
