No claims discount credit for ex-company car driver?

My husband is just moving from a company car to his own car insurance. He has a letter from his company confirming he has had 6 years' claim free driving but is this the same as having your own no claims bonus or will insurance companies only give you a limited amount of NCB credit for this?
I'm sure I've read something about this previously on here but have searched for ages and can't find it.
Thanks if you can help.
