DIVX or MPEG4?!

Options
I've just bought a Sumvision DVD recorder from ebuyer. (Used google checkout and saved 10 quid!)

At the time (last week) it was listed as
Sumvision SV 1000 DIVX/XVID DVD Dual +/- Recorder
(and that's what it says on my invoice)

Now it's listed as
Sumvision SV 1000 MPEG4 Player/DVD Recorder

No where on the box that I've received does it mention DIVX but does say MPEG4. Could this be purely a license issue? The model is the same number SV1000 but why have ebuyer changed it's listing and also price (it's gone down a few more quid!) It was delivered to work on Wednesday but I only noticed yesterday when I was going to connect it up - and their customer services don't work weekends!!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

DIVX and MPEG4 seem to be interchangeable

DivX and XviD are two codecs which follow the MPEG4 standard of video compression.

All you can really do is hook it up and try it out.

I use a sumvision media player with DIVX?MPEG4 compatibility, I think it was only up to DIVX 5 standard officially though it plays everything so far. I'm guessing it's likely to be a legal sort of issue that DIVX is a trademark and sumvision are probably not playing ball on licensing or something. Probably will play most of what you throw at it as it is MPEG4 compliant, just not registered as DIVX compliant

    As wolfman says:

MPEG4 is a standard of video compression of which the DivX5/6 encoder must comply with.
