I sat down earlier and worked out that since starting my overpayments of £104 from January to April last year and then upping it to a £584.10 overpayment (£8583.40 total overpayment) we have so far taken off 3yrs and 6 months from our original MFD. This is equal to £27289.50 we don't have to pay so £18706.10 left in our pockets which we wouldnt have otherwise. We are going to continue the overpayments at some cost to our lifestyle but hey we will need a big pot to spend when we retire won't we and as DH is 30 and I'm 29 we have got some time to build it up so may as well start early. Been bursting to tell somebody all day.... so hope you don't mind but in my quest to raise money to pay off my mortgage, I did a car boot sale on sunday and raised 75 quid and also changed some foreign currency I found in various purses and got 35 quid for that, so grand total of £110 over the weekend!!

i have been overpaying my mortgage ( but not half as much as you lot- well done) i feel inspired now to overpay by more each month now........
i should finish by december next year but now i have decided to finish it before april or sooner.....
BUT..
what if two years down the line i decide to !!!!!! off abroad to give my aching joints and bones a new life- will anyone lend me money if i havent got a mortgage?

Hi,
I'm a 27 year-old mortgage-free wannabe.
I bought my house 18 months ago. I've since met a partner and have rented my house out. All being well I'll sell my place and we'll buy a place together in the next 12-18 months.
In the meantime I'm trawling through these pages reading the great advice there is. The spirit amongst posters is an inspiration.
At the moment I'm cutting down my outgoings to save money to firstly pay off my student loans (only £2.5k to go) and then to build up as big a deposit as possible for our house.
It's really great that my partner buys into the MFW mentality as well. We plan out meals, make pakced-lunches, don't buy flashy clothes and have fun really cheaply (A long weekend of camping for £30 each instead of a city break abroad).
I think a lot of my friends think I'm tight because I don't lump things onto credit cards (although I do a little stoozing) and refuse to withdraw cash from machines with charges etc.
But I'm proud that I'm in control of my finances and my life. I'm so proud that each day I walk into work with my packed-lunch in a big Netto bag. Keeping it real.
