about 10,000 suggestions available on that brief. You need to narrow it down more.

    Likely timescale?
What would money be needed for and how likely is it going to be needed (and how much of it)?
    risk profile?
where and how do you want it invested?
    how old are you?
    what is your tax position?
if over 65 (or coming up to), what is your income?

How unpleasant would it be if it fell in value by 20% for one year before recovering and increasing by 9% a year for the next ten? What if the fall was 30% and the rise 15% a year?

As Dunstonh says you need to give a few more details really, for example when you say
can't tie money up long term
do you mean for less than a year only that will rule out many Fixed rate saving accounts some of which pay the best rates ATM? :)

nilrem, investments can decrease in value but eventually tend to increase overall.

The IBEX35 has made large gains this year, but it would be considered high risk and if you require immediate access and low risk ,read Martin's article on savings accounts.

not tying up the money but need access just in case doesnt necessarily rule out investments. Many modern investments are open ended and have no charge on withdrawals. It may be that the money is likely to be there for 5-10 years but want to be able to access it just in case.

Its that sort of clarification that is needed in addition to above.

james is looking to ascertain your risk by asking one question. Another way of putting it is "How much of a drop in value would you accept in any one year before getting cold feet and pulling out?"

Access is anytime, but of course we have the time to process and we have the risk factor.

I am just illustrating my experience and it has been excellent over the last twelve months, but that is no guarantee for the future.

You cannot make any suggestions at this point. We know nothing about the individual beyond one line in a post.

It also dropped 40% in 12 months a few years back so that puts it in the medium/high risk category.

Agreed it is high risk and I did state that and possibly it has peaked ,but historically long term it is a good bet.Spain is a good place to invest ,not in property though ,but even that long term for some,no negative until you sell.
