Our rent is £92pw, at the mo we get full HB, in April we are going pay some due to the bedroom tax, we have 1 extra room so it will be 14%.
I'm pretty useless at numbers so can someone tell me how much extra we will have to pay. Thanks.

14% of £92 is £12.88
How much will people lose?
The cut will be a fixed percentage of the Housing Benefit eligible rent. The Government has said that this will be set at 14% for one extra bedroom and 25% for two or more extra bedrooms.
The Government’s impact assessment shows that those affected will lose an average of £14 a week. Housing association tenants are expected to lose £16 a week on average.
To get a 10% you move the decimal point by one to the left and lose the last digit on the right.
10% of £92.00 = £9.20
To get to 1% you move the decimal point by two and lose the last two digits.
1% of £92.00 = £0.92 (92p)
To get 5% = half of 10%
15% = 10% + 5%
and so on
So 14% would be 15% minus 92p or (4 x 92p (4 x 1%) + £9.20 (10%) = £12.88, which ever way you find easier to add up or subtract to get to the % you need).

Hi,:) just in case you need to calculate something again, here's a tip for how to get 15% .......
Knock off the last figure, so in the case of £92, you'd be left with £9, so that gives you 10%
Then divide that figure by 2, so half of £9 is £4.50 and this gives you 5%
Add those 2 answers together £9 plus £4.50 and you get £13.50
That isn't the exact answer for 15% of £92, but it's a good estimate. You wanted to get 14%, and that is less than 15%, so you know that 14% of £92 will be a bit less than £13.50.
Similarly, if you want 16% of something, you know it'll be a bit more than 15%, so a bit more than £13.50.
These aren't exact figures, but a good estimate - HTH.

Will you lose 14% of £92 ?
Or will the rent be treated as £92 plus 14% ?
So either you HB will change from £92 to £79.12 or the rent will 'increase' to £104.880 -

Or use the basic of. 14 divide by 100 multiply by xxx (whatever you want)?0 -
Thanks for the replies, I couldn't work out if it's 14% of the whole rent I have to pay or HB stop 14% of the money they pay, or is that the same thing, told you I was useless with numbers.0

If someone can't get to grips with calculating 14% of something, they're unlikely to be able to do the above without a calculator. But my method is just a guesstimate - yours is accurate.

If your rent increases by 14%, your new rent will be £92 plus £12.88 = £104.88 of which you'll pay £12.88
But if HB reduce the £92 by 14%, so that you will be receiving 86% of the total (100% less 14% = 86%) you'll receive £79.12, so will have to pay (drum roll) £12.88 HTH
