It is impossible to (properly) take a website enquiry from its initial stages through to completion in a half day. It is also impossible to design a proper website from scratch in half a day. We do things right by our clients. We consult with them to ensure they get what they need and we have the testimonials to prove it.

Sorry, I should have said half a day is based on the full spec already decided on. The actual designing of a 'basic' site (I am referring to something simple here like most of the Yell sites) would only take half a day. Again, this is based on a logo for example being there already.

So guess all of my comments are a bit confusing having failed to mention the above, sorry. I didn't mean to cause confusion.

That is a really silly statement.

I guess this is based on my experience with 'media' companies who offer everything from web design to marketing and mobile app development. The one I mentioned earlier for example designing a basic website for over £1000 is morally wrong.

This is all my opinion, i'm not causing an argument.

Not looking for an argument and we are just expressing opinions. :)

Mine is that it is not morally wrong to set charges at whatever level you choose for services rendered. People do not have to pay these charges. It is all about choice.

Larger companies with high street premises and lots of staff have higher overheads than people like us who work from home. They need to charge these rates to make a profit. They could possibly employ specialist graphic designers, SEO experts, coders, web designers, marketing and secretarial staff. Their clients are likely (but not always) to get a more polished product than what a single, self-employed person can offer.

I have had enquiries from larger businesses who are looking for a website that may require input from all of these skill sets. I know I cannot provide it because it is outside of my scope and capabilities as a one man business. In these situations I tell them so and advise them to look for a bigger company. ;)

    I agree.

We shouldn't "beat ourselves up" about the immaturity of our market (for web design). The very similar marketing for (bricks & mortar) building is not much better, and has hundreds of years to mature. It has very similar issues to those, similar advantages/disadvantages to being a small operation or a large operation, similar "nibbling at the edges" by DIYers (some of whom get it badly wrong).
  • Thank you everyone for your input - just you to let you know I paid £150 for them to build my website and then an extra £24 per month (£20+VAT) for them to host it. Sorry if I didn't make things clear at the beginning. It is a 12 month contract which is coming to an end in March, so really need to see if I can get it cheaper.

As previously said I am PC illiterate and I must say that alot of things that have been talked about have gone way over my head!! I will contact Yell firstly to see if I can move my hosting to somewhere else as I think that needs to be established first and will then report back.

Once again thank you for all your comments. I am trying to take them on board what has been said and hopefully you will help me move over but like you say need to see whether this is possible first.

    Thank you

  • Sorry for the delay in an update, but have spoken to Yell (now known as Hibu) and they have said that if I want to host my own website then I can have the www. address but would need to have a new website built as they cannot physically transfer my website as it is tied into their build systems. I don't want to pay yet again to have a new website built, so have decided to keep paying them the £24 this year and see where I am next year.

Many thanks for your help and input into this query :)
