    Why not take it straight to your local mechanic who you trust 100%?
    would make sense to give it you your mechanic for a full service regardless if the seller has said servicing up to date.

    working in a garage have loads of people refuse repairs or only have the oil and filter changed saying that they are selling up

    Seriously. These 'offers' are just to get you in the door then they put the fear of god into you as to so many things that are 'dangerous' about your car and how they simply cant let you leave without getting them repaired for your own safety.

    You're caught completely on the hop then they can charge however much they want for whatever they want because you're on the back foot and have no point of reference for price comparison.

    This happened to me at quick fit. I was almost crying when they costed all the repairs above the value of the car. My Dad a mechanic 50 miles away told me to ignore them and drive the car to him and he fixed my car at a small fraction of the price. He said he would not have charged a customer much to fix the fault.
