Ex employer demanding money back.

                    I have just received a threatening letter from the finance department of my ex employer.
It's a final demand for overpayments which they say amount to £1225 and if I do not pay this within 7 days,court proceedings will be issued against me without further warning or notice.In this event I will be liable to additional costs and my credit rating could be adversely affected.
In February 2012,I approached my employer and requested,due to family issues,a career break.They said they could not do this but could give me special leave until I sorted out my Issues and asked that I fill out the appropriate request form.
I filled the form and gave it to my manager to forward to the HR departement.In April I was asked to fill out the form again as the original had been lost and questions were being asked regarding my position,again I filled out the form.
In August 2012,I decided that I could no longer carry on my position with my ex employer and handed in my notice.
Four weeks later I received an acknowledgement letter accepting my resignation.In this letter the say,
"Due to the late notification to Human Resources of your commencement date for unpaid special leave,you have been overpaid for the period 14 February 2012 to 30 April 2012,therefore,we will raise a bill for the overpayment for this period."
They went on to say,
"I have been notified that you did not attend 15 drills(weekly training periods) over 2011/12 year,therefore,we will also need to recover these monies.Once I have a net figure from payroll we will inform you of the recovery amount.
I cannot believe that in all the time from April 2012,they left it until my notice had run out to inform me of overpayments,,I received no correspondence from my employers regarding these issues until then.Had I known the seriousness of this I would have worked this debt off,given the opportunity.
I now find myself with a debt I cannot pay,in one payment anyway.
What are my options??
Just to add,although this has no significance,the original letter came shortly after an invite from my employer to attend a ceremony where I was to receive a long service medal and good conduct award.
I believe debt I owe is due to the incompetence of others.

When you got the letter in 2012 what did you do?

            I hope you get this matter sorted out asap, sorry I can't help hopefully someone with more experience will come along shortly to advise you on how to go forward.It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0

To add more light to this,,my job was as a Retained Firefighter,part time and on call from home.I also had a full time job and due to working shifts,I couldn't attend all drills,which were on a fixed day but was expected to 'make them up' another day.
