Black out Blinds

I am considering getting some black out blinds for the house in the hope that they will help keep the warmth in.
I have read that they help to keep the warmth in during the winter months and the sun out during the summer; as well as keeping light and sound out.
Does anyone have any of these and do you find that they help keep the warmth in the house during the cold winter months?
Would be grateful for any advice.

Black out blinds will be....................black. They will have little effect on the heat retention of your windows.
Any thick set of curtains, thermal or not, will help in keeping the warmth in - yes, in the summer too.0 -
We have black out blinds fitted to our front bedroom plus a full set of curtains and it is snug and warm.
The reason for the black out blinds is to keep out the light of a street lamp that is sited just outside of the window and being facing west the summer sun can wake you up early in the height of summer.
You are on the right track.0 -
I have got black-out roller blinds from John Lewis - the material is cream. They are for keeping the sun out in the height of summer.
Easy to fit.0 -
I used to have thermal blinds in my kitchen and I could tell the difference. just bear in mind they cost a fortune and they last no longer than normal blinds do.
mine were peach coloured from iirc John Lewis.63 mortgage payments to go.

Most blind suppliers only offer black out material, that they sell as blackout blinds. The only true BOB is a cassette style that has a frame all around it and the fabric (blackout meaning it does not let light through), runs inside this cassette or edge.
They will offer a very slight amount of insulation, but not as good as a good curtain and liner. Most rollers sold as BoB's let light and cold/heat around the edges unless you mount it on the wall surface and overlap the window reveal by at least a foot (300mm).
Hope this helps.????

I got mine from Dunelm Mill, they sell two different ones, one of them is both a blackout curtain and also thermal, so if you buy from there make sure you pick the right ones, and they are white/light grey.
Just be aware that not a lot of light is needed to light up a room, so to be totally blackout they need to be taped down or much wider than the window, which still leaves the top of the curtain open so light still gets in but shouldn't be a problem for most people.
Don't expect them to cut down on noise tho, but they do help keep the warmth in and the sun/heat out.0 -
Thanks sniggings I have a Dunelm Mill near me. I notice from their website that they have some nice chenille black out roman blinds that are thick and have thermal qualities. I think I will get one to try and hopefully it will help.0
