N Power Switch - Time?

Hi All,

I have read a few threads here about problems with Npower and getting a contract.

I initiated a switch from BG to them on 12/12/12 via their website. I received an email suggesting to expect a contract 'shortly' soon after.

On 19/12 I received a one page letter, picking up that I have a smart meter and suggesting the 'smart' functionality will stop working (fine I expected this). Again this mentioned 'processing your contract as fast as possible'.

This letter included an account number, i have tried to register for online access but suggests it cannot find the account details and will not allow me to register.

They also set-up the DD details from my bank account on 15/12 (but not taken anything as yet).

I have received nothing since from NP; nor have I had anything from BG saying i'm leaving.

I tried phoning them last week but on each of the three occasions the wait time was around 45 minutes which was too long to hang around and also get a call back as not sure where I would be. I cannot find an easy way to contact them online as you have to login first which I am unable to do. I will continue to try and contact them on phone next week.

How long should the first stages of the process take (e.g. contract, getting final meter read etc..)

Their own website (http://www.npower.com/Home/Electricity-and-gas/How-to-switch/index.htm ) suggests a contract within 10 days and a confirmed start date within a further 25 days.

Your account wont normaly be live from my experience with them, once you are live on supply.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • As an update I got through to them last week. The process had been delayed because I had a smart meter and that my cooling off period wont end until tomorrow.

The operator had no explanation as to why exactly given I had received a letter saying it was OK, they knew I had a smartmeter and that i didn't have to do anything else plus that its now going through without me telling them anything new.

Either way the contract came last week, and the switch over should be done by end of Feb or shortly after.
