hi
posted here some time back re downdraught from our chimney but a different question.
we have a disused fireplace in living room, which now has a decorative electric fire (which doesnt work!) with wood surround. where the chimney goes through the bedroom directly upstairs of living room, there is a vent.
When its windy outside there is wind coming through the vent in bedroom and sometimes even the living room gets some wind with the dummy fire "rattling".
had a roofer around few weeks ago who advised to put a rain / bird guard. quoted abt £150 incl materials.
then i found about these chimney pillows.
so questions are:
1) are chimney pillow decent alternatives and do they stop the draughts?
2) if they are good, how do i install them?
3) any other thoughts on this compared to normal rain guard?

Hi
I bought some last year and they do indeed stop the draughts. Bit cheaper that what the roofer suggested but surprisingly expensive for a balloon.
I used a yoga ball pump to inflate it though some car pumps come with the right adapter.
Good luck

£150
Chimney caps cost peanuts compared to baloons, 150 quid though is way excessive if its just for the cap and fitting, caps cost around the 20 - 30 quid mark.
I would get a roofer or a chimney sweep to fit it, it will be a darn site cheaper than what you have been quoted. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
Get a black rubbish bag and stuff it with some roof insulation and shove up the chimney = 1 chimney balloon0

This is what I did with our bedroom chimney. It works a treat. The bags do degrade after a couple of years but they are dirt cheap to replace.0
