When I used to work in retail, occassionally there would be a 'communication' breakdown and sometimes whole days worth of electronic transactions would get lost.

I once was at a store that had 6 days of transactions that were 'lost' off a particular till, and this was only discovered (by HQ) about 5 months later. There was a mad rush to find the store copies of the electronic slips (which stated pin authorised or had the customer's signature), and forward them on to the bank so that the money could be credited to HQs account. I remember that they were two whole hand fulls in volume, so easy 1500-2000 'transactions'.

About 4 weeks later we started to get customer queries for the transactions from the bank (which we could prove as we had got the store copies back) - there were only about 8 in total :eek:

Rather boringly I keep a spreadsheet for each cc and record every transaction on it. Whwn statement is issued I check the items off and if one doesn't appear I carry it forward to the next month, then the next etc. That way you don't get caught out, and fully understand what you owe!!!
  • I think everyone should hit the "thanks" button for bouncydog's post just out of shear admiration, whether or not they think the post is useful!
  • Well I'm rather shocked at your amazement at Bouncydog. I have always kept my credit AND debit card receipts and stapled them to the relevant statement, thereby always knowing what was outstanding. And then I keep them all for 2 years. I always thought that was what you should do!
    ....Practically Perfect in Every Way......:grinheart
  • Isn't it amazing that nearly all posts of this nature are all about transactions appearing months after they have been undertaken.

There never seems to be posts from anybody asking what they should do if a transaction they have done is not debited on time! LOL

For which I make no apology!!!:rotfl:

To shock you further CC, I even link all of my spreadsheets so they automatically update! I forecast them all forward for 12 months as well so I know exactly what is due when - no shocks for me! Family are all educated so that their dc/cc spend receipts all go into my study so I can keep track.

Seriously, from my point of view, it is worth the half hour to set them all up at the beginning of the year so I can do a quick rec of the statements for bank and cc a couple of times a week.

This works for me and gives me piece of mind. It also means that when a refund is due for something and it is not received in the timescale agreed I can chase it up - you would be amazed how long some providers take on medical/dental refunds!

    To each our own!!;)
