Free Disc Defragmenter recommendations please

I have an average spec pc running Windows XP. I have been using Auslogics Disc Defragmenter for the last few months and was pretty happy with it. But after updating to the latest version the "system report" declared @280 junk files that needed removing.

Ran Windows Disc Cleaner, Temp File Cleaner (which had cleared them in the past) and CCleaner. Nothing removed them. Nor was I able to locate them to remove manually.

So, can anyone recommend a new defragger as I've given up on Auslogics. Something straightforward and easy to use, please.

Or, if anyone has suggestions how to clear the junk files, I'll give Auslogics another try. (I suspect it was just a ploy to get me to buy their BoostSpeed program!)

Sorry for the essay. Thanks for any replies.

Defraggler from Piriform, the same people responsible for CCleaner.

+1 for defraggler - although to be honest, in the past when I've compared this with Auslogics I've been hard-pushed to notice much in the way of a difference.

More recently I became very frustrated with Windows and all that is needed to go with it. This led me to not wanting to up-grade from xp largely because my kit is old and likely would have struggled with anything younger than xp and had no chance of eg Windows 7; and BTs steadfast refusal to up-grade the telephone lines where I live ie no broadband. Sooooh, breath held deeply, I downloaded myself a copy of wary puppy linux which I found very easy to set up, runs from a cd in ram only so no need to defrag etc and, frankly flies despite my, in modern parlance, aged, wheezing machinery. Very nice and would recommend it to anyone who'd listen!:D

    Good luck

if you are looking to speed up your pc, you're looking in the wrong place, defragging and deleting junk files wont make any difference.

Ah, but it's a mixture of the hype of the defragmenter manufacturers and the hope of the computer user which wins out over logic!

In the days before XP, when we had slow disks, there seemed to be a positive advantage in defragmenting a hard disk. Less so now.

even in the old days, the real world performance benefits were overhyped, unless the platter was the size of a massive pizza.

    Thanks Closed,

My pc is 2.4GHz dual processor, so when it's working it's great. When I got it, I implemented all the things you proposed in your "speed up slow pc thread", just to make sure I was maximising performance.

The problems occur when I download a large amount of data, then we are "crawling through sludge"! The HD is only about 120GB, so not great!?

Don't think I should post that! But about 30GB of data.

Just running the Defraggler. Will post Hijack after.

Sorry Closed, I don't want to be the guy that keeps you waiting. This isn't urgent. Come back to it tomorrow! I appreciate your interest though. No, lots of free space on the HD.

To the guys that posted Defraggler: I'm liking it so far! But is the first defrag reeaally slow?

Just noticed the defragger had 7 HOURS to go, so pulling the plug on this till tomorrow!
