Interesting report:
"The two antipodean destinations are among the most expensive in the world for tourists, according to this survey - measured by comparing the costs of eight typical items, including drinks and meals."

Surprising to see Spain come out as the cheapest, but I suppose it depends on where the survey is done. Benidorm is much cheaper than Barcelona.

It is not surprising as when I was in Australia in 2008 I was getting over aus$2.50 to the £. The rate now is aus$1.47. And at that time prices were comparable with back in the UKDoshwaster wrote: »Interesting report:

It's a pity the article didn't bother to state what the equivalent cost would be in London and in cheaper areas of the UK, as it stands there is no sensible basis for comparison so is pretty pointless.0

i spent 9 days in perth recently in a travelodge and it cost £1100
but it was a rather nice travelodge not the usual crapy ones you get in the uk0 -

Exactly.
It's because the exchange rate is horrendous.
We were back packing there & had to share a sandwich as couldn't afford to buy 2 at lunch! We worked out the bad rate cost is about £1k compared to what it used to be. They were interviewing tourists on the tv asking them what they'd had to cut back on on their trips. Most answered excursions, which was true for us also, but as we were on a budget it was also food! We were pretty hungry some days.
It's not that expensive if you're earning Aussie $ (although food shopping is definitely more there).0 -
Daft thread really.
Does the starting point include or not include the airfare and travelling time.
We had a week in Lloret de Mar not long since on half board. Nice hotel, hardly heard an English voice, flight included for £220 pp. Took a pair of hours to get there.
How much is a return flight to Oz, and how much time is wasted in transit and recovery before being able to enjoy the experience?0 -
It is more expensive than it used to be. I remember when I first went it was about 2 dollars to the pound and not about 1.5. Still a great Country to visit though. Went Christmas 2011 and drove from Perth to Melbourne across the Nullarbor Plain, then onto Sydney for the New Year fireworks.
Off there again in August.Cairns area, Darwin and top end and Bungle Bungles. Ending up in Sydney again. It is still possible to get good deals though. Travelodge in Sydney CBD worked out at £440 for 5 nights.0
