Gas Price Issue - anyone help?

Just had the gasman come around and he said that British gas charge me on a 5 digit reading when I have a 6 digit reader..
So the 500000 they have read is actually 50000
Does this make any difference? He seems to think thatif my bill was 10k, it would now be 1 k?
Perhaps, perhaps not, but drip feeding the thread is very troll like, the lower digits are the ones that will change more readily, take a pic on one day and a pic the next day, you can edit out the meter number if you wish, readers will be able to resolve your queiry much more easily.0
