Car insurance for a US licence holder

Hi

I'm going to be doing a 6 month teacher exchange with someone from the US.

We are going to swap cars - however I'm finding it very difficult to find an insurance company that will insure using her US licence.

Legally her licence allows her to drive here for up to a year without having to change it.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Ciarán

    Hi Ciaran

Noticing that you live in Newry means that you only have access to the restricted choice of insurance companies operating in NI.To start with I would explore avenues such as the education authority and/or body arranging the exchange / your teachers union / any chat forums for teachers or teachers exchanges as car insurance when cars are exchanged must be a regular problem.

I am assuming that your present insurance company wont play ball.Hopefully your car insurance is due for renewal before the exchange starts so that you can switch to a more amenable company.I would suggest you contact Endsleigh locally as they deal with many overseas students on foreign licences.Of UK insurance companies who provide cover in NI try Admiral and Elephant. In the local market try Abbey who have branches in most towns and Open & Direct in Coleraine and elsewhere.Quinn Direct might worth trying although I dont know their position on overseas licences.

Finally Downunder Insurance in London will cover US and other visitors for a six month period under a scheme with a large American company but it is not cheap as it is intended for Aussies with campers visiting every corner of EU and beyond.

Hope this helps. No guarantees given on instant solution or bargain price.Hope you enjoy the US experience. It is probably best to telephone for prices than trying on line.

the other place to ask this question would be in The Back Room of Honest John - you will have to register but it's painless and they're friendly and extremely knowledgeable about all things car!
