Easiest/fastest way to transfer data from one computer to another?

I'll add a vote for having both old and new computers in the same place and connecting them via a network connection.
It is a bit slow but only needs to be done once.
Having said that, if you don't have some sort of external disk for backups this may be the time to buy one otherwise if you suffer some sort of problem on your new computer you will be back asking about data recovery.
Also the first thing your nice new computer will ask about is making a backup, if you have a USB hard disk you will be ready.0
