I have arrears with British gas of £500, I'm on a payment meter, they take £6 a week of any credit on the meter, anyone know if this can be lowered? I know it sounds low already but with this cold weather I'm using a lot of gas and finding it hard to pay both.

Just wondering is it up to who ever you get to speak with on the phone or are there any rules on what they can ask you to pay each week?

  • Used to be £3.99 a week in 2005 and it was same in 1997 as well. May have gone up since, but you can ask. Are you on income related benefits as that may make a difference. Also check with www.charis.org
Some of the companies on there may possibly be able to help you.
  • hi i once had this question for bg, they said that £6 is the lowest they can set and thats if your on benifits, if your not and working full time that could make you pay more

The issue with gas ppm is you need to build up a level of credit during the summer to cover the winter months when you use several times the amount of gas. Same is also true if you pay on bill.

that's the theory and I will do that but just getting the meter and being on a low income, it will take time to build a credit, which doesn't help the situation for now.

But anyway, good in a way to know I'm on the min pay back a week so thanks to those that gave that info.
