Underpaid tax letter

Hi

I received a letter saying that I had underpaid tax in the 2011/12. Part of their calculation claimed that I had received nearly £1500 of jobseeker's allowance which is not the case as I was in full time employment.

How do I sort this out?

pick up the phone and speak to HMRC
best to have the P60 or details of your earnings for that year

best to try first thing in the morning or early evening
  • Is your name, address and NINO correct on the letter?

  • You will need to write to them as this cannot be corrected over the telephone. In instances where JSA info has not come from the job centre directly, HMRC will estimate the amount.

You need to send in either your P45 (s) and/or P60 from the job centre for 2011/12. If you do not have these, you will need to ask the job centre for "Tax Details Enquiry Screen, print out JA509529" to send to HMRC instead.

Alternatively, if you did not receive any benefits in 2011/12, you need to ask for a letter from the job centre confirming this and send it in.

As this appears to be an HMRC c0ck-up, the first step it to telephone HMRC and ask them to explain which mythical job centre paid the JSA or mythical employer has messed up the NINO or which dodgy immigrant has duplicated the OP's NINO ? (*)

(*) True story, it happened to a friend of mine, and like any form of fraud it is difficult to prove "It was not me".

If you call them, they will just tell you to write in with the info I mentioned. They cannot deal with it over the telephone I'm afraid. The JSA is generally estimated from the claim start date until the tax year end and based on the standard weekly rate.

Regardless of how it was calculated, it is incorrect and info needs to be sent in to adjust the calculation.

It is not a "c0ck up" by HMRC or any meddling with NINO's or possible fraud, if someone has contacted the job centre to check if a claim can be made, the claim start date is passed to HMRC, regardless of whether any benefit has been received. HMRC can only use the information they have and estimate the benefit based on the info they have at that point, in the absence of anything from the job centre. Calculations can easily be amended and in this case, the debt would most likely not start to be collected until April 2013 so it should not have caused any financial implications for the person concerned.

The main issue here is with the information passed to HMRC from the job centre.
