Flueless gas fires

Our balanced flue gas fire has just given up the ghost. Coldest day of the year and 4 inches of snow:mad:

I have been searching on the Internet for a new one (Old one over 30 years old) and a lot of places are selling wall hanging flueless fires, but I can't seem to find any reviews, or an ability to compare flueless and balanced flue.

Anybody here able to help me?

Thanks

Does it really need replacing? There's hardly anything that can go wrong with them so a repair should be cheaper.

Don't - just don't. An accident looking for somewhere to happen IMO. I personally know of no RGI who is prepared to fit one.

Could be wrong but never heard of a gas fire without a flue, where would the exhaust gasses go ? Balanced flue gas appliances don't need extra room vents but conventional flued appliances do.

Still a potential deathtrap IMHO and it will need a chuffing great hole in the wall to provide ventilation (exact size according to MIs) which may not be covered up with a view to preventing draughts.

When we had a new CH boiler fitted I asked the engineer to remove our flueless fire in the living room as we didn't use it. He removed the fire (still have it in the garage though) and capped off the gas pipe free of charge as he considered them so dangerous. He refuses to fit them.

  • I have a flueless gas fire for the last 1.5 years and have had no problems. The vent cannot be covered up and is not that large that it allows draughts through. The vent is on the floor and about 20 by 30cm it does depend on room size and kilowatt of the heater.
Try superior fires for a good deal.

Flueless fires are very similar to gas cookers therefore they can't be that dangerous as we all have not stopped using them.

Fires are rather different to cookers.
Cookers are unlikely to be used unattended.
They are used only for a couple of hours a day, tops.
Gas heaters may be used for weeks on end, while the user is asleep.

Gas cookers aren't used for very long and if serviced and maintained properly then the amount of CO emitted is small. The kitchen also has a fan (which should always be used when cooking) forcing enough ventilation in the kitchen to remove any moisture and reduce the level of potential harmful gases.

Flueless gas fires require the window to be partially open and any vents open and clear. It's much more dangerous as it creates draughts which most people don't like so there is potential for the vents to be closed especially in a living area.

We slaughter 3,500 people a year on our roads but that doesn't stop people driving. "they can't be that dangerous" is ostrich mentality. Sorry if that appears rude. The point is a very large number of RGIs refuse point blank to fit these things. That MUST tell you something about how professional gas people view them from a safety aspect.
