Zipped files

Options
Can someone explain how I can open a zipped file that was originally made on a Windows XP computer and emailed to a Windows 7 computer.

I have downloaded the file and can read the list of contents but when I click "open" on one of them, the computer is unable to read it.

    Like this.
To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.
Double-clicking an individual file in a compressed archive (.zip) will simply extract that file alone to a temporary location.

Is it possible that the original zipped file had a password?

Possible, but unlikely. As I recall that particular function wasn't available to Home Edition users.
When you try to move or open a file that is protected with a password, a Password Needed dialog box is displayed.

What were you expecting to find? It could just be an obscure file format.

On the other hand, if it really is encrypted you'll have to ask the sender about it.
