Unexpected direct debit
digitig
I recently switched gas and electricity supplier to First Utility. They emailed me to tell me that the first direct debit would be taken from my account on 5 February. However, they actually took the first payment on 7 January, then sent me an email after they had taken the payment that the 5 February date they had given was an error. Because I wasn't expecting the debit, I didn't have funds in the bank to cover it, so I'm being stung for £25, and presumably it damages my credit rating.
What should my next steps be?

I think that is covered by the direct debit guarantee and you should request a refund from your bank.

I agree, if the payment date changes they are expected to give you advance notice of the change in date. As above tell the bank you are claiming under the direct debit guarantee. The bank should refund you immediately.0

As well as any charges.
But be aware that while First Utility made a error on the date and did not notify you in time about this change.
They could impose a charge for the bounced DD.
So talk to First Utility and see if they will refund the fee based on its their error.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
Can they legally charge me for a bounced DD if they took a payment without notifying me in advance?dalesrider wrote: »But be aware that while First Utility made a error on the date and did not notify you in time about this change.

It will be the bank charging for the bounced D/D not the utility company.
The Utility company should refund this to you - but you need to claim it from them.0 -

You will have to refer to their T/C on that. but many co's will charge if a payment is bounced back.
Yes I know it is their error. I would go back, if they are not willing to assist then raise a complaint.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
You may struggle to get anywhere with First Utility, there are reports everywhere online of their non-existent customer service.0
