Posting alcohol to US

Just a quick question not related to ebay, but thought someone on here might know!!

Can I send alcohol to the US? It's a gift for a friend and I am not sure if it will be allowed through customs.

its illegal to send alcohol by mail within the USA, so I guess it wouldnt be allowed...

Does anyone know for sure, because my post office have said its ok!! (I was surprised at that!)

I have sent Alcohol to the US before and didn't have a problem. Maybe i was just lucky.
