total PR gesture from Tesco - likely a loss leader , but after the slip in market share over xmas , and the horsemeat , they need every bit of good pr they can get

Probably; but we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Neigh, neigh, thrice neigh..................

With apologies to Francis Howerd and any Up Pompeii fans.

Wasn't it Asda whom came out first with the PR gesture?

The headline for this story is really misleading. Tesco and Asda are not "accepting" HMV vouchers. They are essentially refunding ones that were bought in their stores.

"Refunding" would be even more misleading imo, it suggests you can actually get your cash back/money back on your card. At least "accepting" describes roughly what they are doing - allowing people to spend the value of their HMV gift cards in Asda/Tesco stores.
  • It's a decent gesture, but in all honesty, gift vouchers need to be clarified in law. Either they're a payment method, in which case they shouldn't be able to be refused simply because the store is in administration, or they're goods in their own right, in which case SOGA should kick in under these circumstances and customers should be entitled to a refund anyway.

    Consider them a payment method.

Sellers can decide which payment methods they wish to accept. They don't even have to accept cash if they don't want to.
  • So what if the voucher was a gift and there is no receipt? my son had one from a relative for Christmas....have no idea where it was bought.

When gift cards are purchased a receipt is always given & it is advised to put this receipt in with the gift card. The receipt has the card number on it & the amount of money on there. Maybe you could contact the relative to see if they still have the receipt, fingers crossed.

I'd also like to ask this question, will they only exchange it if you have proof of purchase? I have one that is basically just a gift card, no receipt etc.

Obviously they will only accept them with a valid receipt as this is proof it was purchased from Tesco/Asda. If you recieved it as a gift then try asking the person you got it from if they still have it. Worth a try

Typical of WH Smith , never set foot in since purchasing by mistake an outdoors voucher instead of a gift token...(SA picked the wrong gift card) and then refused to refund me.....horrible company....ands not just on that experience...

  • check your local independant record stores, as the one in our city ( only them and hmv are there) will except hmv vouchers,

Its a good gamble to try and get HMV customers over to them..they have been there for umpteen years, well before hmv, virgin, right price came and went..
