Cutting steel

Hi all

I'm helping a friend of ours who has a gate in her garden with a steel frame. I need to cut a piece out for the bolt in the lock to fit. What is the best tool to use?

I have a power saw with a metal attachment but not sure if this will do the job or just make a total mess. I'm not sure a mini-hacksaw would be "man" enough for the job and a full size one won't fit.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

I presume you want to cut an oblong hole about 40mm long and 20mm wide for the tongue on the lock to engage in the frame on the wall ?????
    If so..........
Mark where the tongue of the lock hits the frame draw round it with a pencil
but all a mm or two or it may be too tight.
You will need a hacksaw that has a handle that the blade fits into at one end.
Drill a hole in each corner of the piece you want to cut out with a drill that is slightly bigger that the hacksaw blade.
The put the blade in and start cutting......depending on how thick the metal is its going to be a long slow job.....and get some spare hacksaw blades !!!!
May need the file the corners to make a good job.

Depends on the size of the slot you need...

Im thinking about 12x30? But not quite sure what you mean.

Drill a series of holes the correct diameter for the width of the slot, so they almost touch each other, then just run between them with a file a round file and clean it up with a flat file.
