Pre-lci. Regret it now but I reduced my budget to allow a buffer for swirl flap removal, gearbox fluid change, DPF problems, cracked exhaust manifold and all the other pitfalls I had read about.

I knocked £2k off my budget leaving £8k which wouldn't stretch to an LCI (at the time).
I can do most of those jobs myself but didn't realise at the time, it is a very rewarding car to work on.
I wish I had kept my original budget and gone LCI knowing I could DIY most of it.

Agree the dreaded swirl flap issue certainty caught many people out.
I got mine done at PMW exactly a week later after owning the car and TBH it wasn't until I joined the Bmw forums that I knew anything about the swirl flap issue.
  • It really makes my teeth itch when people like you call BMW drivers idiots, me and my missis both drive them and can tell you now my BMW is quick as but I wouldn't ever act like a tw*t in it and once a year me and my mates will hit the autobahns for a weekend where even then I sh*t out at around 130mph knowing it will take me to 165mph if I wanted to.

You need to stop listening to the myth about bimmer drivers and start looking at vauxhall and mondeo drivers.

Its not all BMW drivers who are idiots, just the ones that come flying up behind you on a duel carriageway/motorway, flashing their lights and guesturing wildly despite the fact that you are doing the speed limit and already overtaking. In my experience 3 out of 4 drivers who do this type of thing to me are in BMWs. Not a myth, but not saying its true for all either. Just my personal experience

Also, didn't BMW, Audi and Mercedes all agree to limit their cars to 155mph?

  • The proposed new car will depreciate by quite a bit, as a second-hand car, just by driving it out of the showroom. How long do you think you will keep the car for?

Mine has been remapped which means the 155mph stricter wouldn't apply.

Idiots aren't restricted to BMW's. They're everywhere. My daughter and i watched a race between an M Class and Toyota Avensis last week on the motorway. Coming off the same slip road as us, the traffic lights were red. Cue both idiots getiing out of their cars for a punch up. We were directly behind them, it was very amusing once they'd stopped but their behaviour on the motorway was appalling, no consideration for anyone else at all.

I have no issues with BMW drivers, it's usually the idiots who think they're driving BMW's, and not a Nissan Micra who are the problem.

I'm surprised that on a 'money saving' site people are encouraging a £20k loan for a car, especially when you can get a similar model on a car a few years older and it cost considerably less, and even more so when the person in question says he is 'worried' about the loan

(speaking as someone who now has pretty much the car of my dreams and comfortable finances purely by not stretching myself for minimal gain)

Two schools of thought methinks BlizeH,

one that says yes it's a money saving site, save all you can.

    and,

two, If you can afford it and it's what you really, really want then hey! isn't that what we save money for?

May be wrong, happy to be corrected.

More than enough. Just ignore all the non relevant comments.

I work for a large luxury auto manufacturer and I understand the appeal of a really nice car. Luckily I get to borrow them whenever I want to but if I didnt have that option i'd also spend a good deal of money on one.

You can easily extend the term of the loan to fit it within your monthly outgoings but i'd advise to repay the loan over a shorter period with a larger sum per month if you can afford it. You can set these terms up with the lender, just ensure your income is stable enough to do so.

Again, I see your points, but with cars you can save so much by having something that's just a few years old - the 1 series BMW he's after is a great car, no doubt, but there are plenty of models practically identical to the one he's after for FAR less money.

I was looking at various cars when I bought mine, part of me was tempted to go silly with a new one, but I ended up saving almost £30k and getting a car I love for practically a quarter of the price - it looks almost identical, has most of the extras of the more expensive one... it's just older and not quite as quick

Again I know it's not for everyone, but the amount you can save on a car with only a very small compromise is staggering
