    Ok did a hard reset to fix it after a little googling.
    For future problem solving:

    -disconnect power adaptor;
    -disconnect battery;
    -hold down power button for atleast 20 seconds.

    cheers

    Glad to hear you've fixed it, OP. Where would we be without Google? :D

    For future reference, I once thought I'd broke my laptop keyboard because it wouldn't work at all. I didn't have a USB mouse either.

    It turned out I'd managed to hit the tiny keyboard lock button that I'd never noticed before. Mine is on the black strip between my space bar and touch pad.

    holding down the power button for 6 seconds would have done the same

    have you backed up recently?

    Bleurgh don't get me started on that button!!:mad: I actually had to turn off my laptop today to undo that button. And shutting down on windows 8 was a complete mystery to me until today :rotfl:

    Maybe I didn't hold it long enough then.

    Would a backup save steam games I've downloaded?

    I meant that you don't have to remove battery etc, holding down the button long enough does the same thing, not that it matters

    a disk image backup would save everything http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
