    This is a common issue.

firstlast@gmail.com and first.last@gmail.com can be separately created accounts (by different people) but emails will tend to go to firstlast regardless of which address is specified.

    And this is the explanation.
Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters within usernames...

Which begs the question - why do they let different people setup similar but different email accounts, if they know this is an issue?

Did you even read the link.

they don't let you sign up an account where the emails may go to someone else and never have. The dots can go anywhere its still your account and somebody else can't sign one up with just an extra dot or a dot removed etc..

"Sometimes you may receive a message sent to an address that looks like yours but has a different number or arrangement of periods. While we know it might be unnerving if you think someone else's mail is being routed to your account, don't worry: both of these addresses are yours.

Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters within usernames, you can add or remove the dots from a Gmail address without changing the actual destination address; they'll all go to your inbox, and only yours. In short:
    homerjsimpson@gmail.com = hom.er.j.sim.ps.on@gmail.com
    homerjsimpson@gmail.com = HOMERJSIMPSON@gmail.com
    homerjsimpson@gmail.com = Homer.J.Simpson@gmail.com

All these addresses belong to the same person. You can see this if you try to sign in with your username, but adding or removing a dot from it. You'll still go to your account.

If you get mail that seems to be intended for someone else, it's likely that the sender entered the wrong address, just like if you've ever dialed a wrong phone number for someone. In these cases, we suggest contacting the original sender or website when possible to alert them to the mistake."

In which case things have changed, because they USED TO let people sign up that way ... that's why there are many cases of people receiving emails for someone else - do a Google for it, and there has even been the same question posted in THIS forum within the past year. :)

And yes, I DID read the linked article.

Strange, I was invited to the beta sometime before october 2004 and it was quite clear on the signup page that the amount or positioning of dots were not important, Although I know exactly what you mean about receiving other peoples emails. at least once a month I get an email meant for somebody else (not just spam).

It they have always been addressed correctly (with dots or without but to my exact email),but then as I was invited quite early in the life of gmail and I managed to get myfirstnamemylastname@gmail.com with no numbers or random bits added, I guess its the one people try when they don't remember the one they should be emailing like myfirstnamemylastname63@gmail.com

Do you have any examples of people having the same addresses with dots and without dots on different accounts?

I have never heard of this to be honest, I was always under the impression johnnyboyrebel or johnnyboy.rebel would all come to me and if someone tried creating johnny.boy.rebel they couldn't.

Not only do the dots not matter but you can also add extra info to your email address eg name+mse@gmail.com Some sites refuse email addresses with a + in but it's a handy way to see who is leaking your email address.
