Compendium/Alphabetised entries for blogging

Options
I would like to start a blog in the style of an alphabetised compendium or reference guide which I could potentially make quite large in total, and add lots of small to medium entries to over time. I don't want to state at this moment exactly what the idea relates to. Not meaning to be unfriendly about it.

Can anyone suggest how I might go about this? I use blogger presently, for another project, which is new and I'm also new to blogging in general. From what I can see blogger is quite limited for what I want to do. I don't like the by date layout. I would rather have titles and labelled click throughs if possible, as well as a home page ('static page?) but I haven't yet figured out how to do these things.

Is Wordpress better for what I've just described? Is it an option for a large reference/wikipedia type site like I described in the first paragraph?

Do any other options spring to mind?

I would likely only consider free options.

Sounds like you want a content management system or wiki rather than a blog. Mediawiki is the software behind Wikipedia and many other large wiki sites so would probably suit your needs if you can find hosting. There are plenty of other wiki engines though

Thank you. I did think a wiki type of sorts but I'm noob at all of this. Do any free sites spring to mind?
