Dont understand this. Wife and I between us own two cars. We both drive each one dependent on need. We both have same no claims, similar age, I had fault claim 2 years ago she had one 4 years ago.

We have a policy for each car. One in my name, one in wifes with other person as named driver. Which makes sense.

Getting a quote from M&S at the moment. If I put me down as main driver its £50 cheaper!

In all honesty, there is no main driver - we both pretty much drive both cars the same.

Should I just put me down as main driver? I cant see how insurance can ever prove that I'm not main driver after all....

Just checked other car insurance which is in wifes name and she is down as main driver of that one. Guess it makes sense to put me down as main for this one so we're both main drivers of at least one of the cars!

  • So you're going to be the main driver for both vehicles?

I am on both of our cars - just point out to them on their recorded telephone conversation that in reality you both use the car equally much. I think it's accepted a husband/wife (or whatever form of partnership) may well use a car equally.

That's perfectly possible - why the question?

Isn't it now illegal to quote different amounts purely on the basis of gender?

You can (generally) only accrue NCD on a single policy at once, and (generally) NCD aren't recognised if no insurance is held for 2 years, so it's a much better idea to ensure each of you has a policy, even if your usage of the cars is 50/50.

Hope you dont have an accident. Because as above are you really the main driver on 2 cars?

How will you explain that one to the insurance when they say we are not paying out?

  • You need to check the issue over NCD.

If this car was previously insured by your wife and she was the main driver then the NCD is hers.

Most insurers state it is the insured that brings the NCD to the party and so you will be fine if she is the policyholder and you are the named driver. Some insurers however decide it is the maindriver that counts not the policyholder in which case you cannot use her NCD and your NCD is tied up on your other car and so you'd have to get a quote with 0 NCD which will almost certainly be much more expensive

Were I a rock star I'd have a fleet, many of which my wife (or blonde Playboy bunny) would never drive, so I would probably be the main driver on maybe a dozen cars, but she'd be named as a driver in case I was too rocked out after a concert to drive home.

    Just one example..

 What is the problem with being the main driver on two cars? I've got three and I'm the main driver on all of them. My wife seldom drives any of them.
  • I would suggest you look at a multi car policy may be cheaper for you. I would say you do have to be careful in a small accident no one is probably going to be concerned but if you make a big claim rest assured that the insurance company will become suspicious and check. You could talk to insurer that way you will get the right answer and should have no problem.

No. Just checked - wife is down as main driver for our other car. So I guess its ok to put me down as main for this car.

I admit having same person down as main for both might be a bit dodgy.

My argument is that, in practice, there is no main driver.
