Lap top battery- Dead?

Options
On my lap top when up came the prompt to plug it in ot it would go into Hibernation, it was plugged in so I did nothing, another prompt then it switched off.

How do I find out what the problem is, the wall socket switch, the adapter connector?

It was purchased Dec '10 so no warranty.

Please help if you can.

  • Try using a different plug sock on wall if that doesnt work its either the adaptor or the socket on the laptop

    Thanks you for that info.

I have plugged it into a different socket but nothing has lit up. Can you buy these separately?

First of all before going diving in head first and going for the expensive option as bengalknights has, start at the beginning and check the fuse in the mains lead.

Next if that is OK if you've got a voltage meter check the charge plug on the charger - a computer repair shop should test it for free.

If you have a voltage there then you're looking at a dodgy charge socket on the laptop and that means the laptop has to go to a company that do such repairs - should be around £35 or so. If you don't have a voltage there, you're looking at a dodgy plug on the charger so need a replacement charger which can be found on Ebay.

remove the battery, hold down the power button for 10 seconds, see if it powers up. Are there any lights on the power brick?

    make and model of laptop?

I cannot remove the battery,I have arthritis in my hands.

Make is Acer Aspire model 5742Z
    6 cell li-ion battery

    500gb hdd
    4gb ddr3 memory
    Intel proc P6100
    " HD graphics
    dvd multi drive

When I plugged it in to any socket, the battery light will flash then die out again, I don't have a 5amp fuse to test it, I don't have a battery tester.

It did work for a whole morning last week then died again.

Use a multimeter to check the DC output from the adapter Your local friendly independent electrical retailer will do this for you if you ask them nicely.
No or insufficient output means a new adaptor is required.

Does the charging lead have a light on it? If so, and if it isn't coming on, it has probably died. Do you know anyone with a similar laptop so you can borrow their charging lead to test this?

If you do need to get a new charging lead, check the code number on the adaptor and then check amazon to see what the cost of a generic replacement charging lead is. It is often a lot cheaper than getting the manufacturer's branded version.
