Redundancy being paid via CVA

Options
Hello everyone,
Right,.well i was made redundant a couple of weeks ago, the company is in a cva and i will be getting my redundancy through this. I understand this takes longer than normal redundancy.
When made redundant, i was told, by my very shifty boss man that i MUST go and sign on immediately. I thought this was a little odd, but i did it any way.
I was also told that any job seekers i get will be taken out of my final redundancy payment (by someone else)
I attended my first meeting at the job centre and they told me i could only claim contribution based jsa based on my circumstances.
Due to the current weather, and me living in the middle of nowhere, i literally cannot get out of my house to drive the 15 miles to my sign on appointment tomorrow, and I've spoken to the job centre, who were very rude and said i need to be there or u won't get paid.
What i want to know is, was i told to get singed on straight away do my old company would have a little less to pay back to their cva?
I understand i may be jabbering a bit, but any help is truly appreciated.

Signing-on is the very first thing you must do when you have finished your last ever shift. They say that you should not get JSA for the period that would be paid-for should you get PILON rather than working-out your notice period, but I found out via a contact at the DWP that this is a load of tosh & you get Contribution-based JSA from day one.
As for the actual redundancy paid for the time you worked ther, this is not counted for the purposes of Tax or, it seems, JSA (I got £8k with PILON & Service pay, so was expecting a benefits reduction of the usual £1.50 per £250 over £6k, but the JCP adviser looked at my paperwork and informed me that they will ignore the £4500 service pay as it is classed as 'compensation for the loss of employment').

As for not being able to get to sign-on, fail to show and you get an automatic 2 week sanction. This increases for each 'fail-to-show'.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

Yes, agree. It doesnt take much for the JC to sanction your pay.

You have to do exactly what they say, otherwise you get sanctioned.
I understand your frustration. If you dont want to drive, any public transport available.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You were probably told to sign on straight away as when BIS (redundancy payment service) calculate your Notice Pay they will have expected you to mitigate your loss - i.e. signed on.

If you don't sign on then BIS will make a notional adjustment to reduce your notice pay. It is therefore not about reducing the debt in the CVA - to claim losses you have to be able to show you mitigated them. Similarly if you get a job you will recieve a lower notice payment.

When making redundancies in an insolvency situation it is common and recommended practice to emphasise the importance of signing on immediately.
