That is the absolute key political dichotomy that we face in this country. About half the population believes in helping those who try to help themselves -- equality of opportunity. The other half believes in helping anyone who asks for it -- equality of outcome.

There are no doubt people in both camps with extremes of each. I think your percentages are wrong probably closer to 80/20. Believe it or not the vast majority of soft red and yellow pariahs you dislike have strong work ethics and a desire to succeed just different values.

A number of those of right leaning persuasion wouldn't know a hard days work either.

I know you absolutely hate me saying this, but I'm going to say it again anyway. The 50/50 rough assumption is based voting habits. If you vote Labour you are not voting for a government which will prioritise those with work ethic, enterprise etc over those who show none, but who still expect a demand a comfortable life at the expense of those who do. Maybe they see other benefits from voting Labour that are more important in their minds. But the welfare, entitlement, & dependency culture will not change under Labour. Blair's government was allegedly as far right as Labour gets and it only got worse under him.

That one girl was funny when she was asked why are you getting these letters you will be evicted soon, she said with a straight face "I havent been paying my rent"

She will just be housed somewhere else and again and again, soon there will be a string of unhappy landlords chasing her but they will never get their money.

Presumably some influential do gooders have prevented rent money being paid directly to landlords, because it would be too 'demeaning' for the welfare recipients not to be allowed to waste it as they see fit.

Do100% of people vote or was it closer to 65%

Of those that did, last time round, it wasn't 50/50.

35% of the vote didn't vote for labour or conservatives.

I don't believe it is a labour policy to not to prioritise work and eneterprise. I don't believe any party actively or passively seeks to grow the dependency under the welfare state.

I doubt their will be much difference or relative cost in welfare at the end of this parliament.

The problem then is if the claimant did something wrong with their claim and the money has to be taken back from the Landlord which causes repossessions.

........for as long as it was crime and violence of the underclass upon the under class?

When did we stop the free cruise to Australia punishment?

True, they were fully aware of the punishment that would be heading their way if they attacked a Toff, strangely enough that sort of protection didn't seem to stretch as far as the police, they were obviously considered as part of the underclass as well.

Just watched this program because of this thread. I have to say it did not change my opinion of these sorts of people one bit. They claimed to have no money yet copious amounts of fags and booze were consumed throughout the programe. Most of them (with the exception of one girl) seemed to lack and sort of motivation to make their lot better. How can anyone like this be helped it they wont help themselves?

Children and young people tend to mimic the adults they grow up around.

All the mothers in the program smoked even though they had no money, and most of the young people on their program openly said their dad was a waste of space, so you can guess what they did in their spare time. This means it's not surprising that the young people smoked and drank.

Looking at the people I know and have known. The people who smoke have at least one parent who smokes. However the ones from a middle class background are more likely to give up when they know the health risks or someone gets ill from it.

While only one of the girls had any motivation and could cope with delayed gratification, the lads weren't too bad. However all the lads suffered from not having a decent father like figure in their lives to show them the way.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I never had a decent father figure to look up to.
I have close friends who say I aspired to be like my grandfather.

As a father now, my role in life is to provide for my children what I missed out on and be that role model for them.

My point is that while I understand your stereotype, there is the opportunity to be the exception from the norm.
