EDF Prepayment final electricity statement abuse!
I moved into my new place on 30 Sep 11. The old supplier was EDF, so on the day I called EDF to inform there was a new occupier at that address, they set a new account number. They didn't require to know my name, as they told me to simply use the key available in the flat to make the top ups. I was not interested on setting the account properly as I was thinking to switch to Ebico.
On 13 Oct 11, Ebico inform me that EDF had raised an objection to the switch.
I called EDF and I was told that they wanted to check if there was any debt left. They checked that I was on a prepayment meter and that everything was alright, so they authorized the switch on the day saying that I was able to use their key and the EDF credit till it finished.
I received the Southern (Ebico) key and returned the EDF key in the envelope and I started using my new key.
In October/November 2012, I started received strange letters from EDF saying that they were preparing my final bill! In December 2012, I received a new letter from EDF saying that nothing was due since I was on a prepayment meter. Very smart of you, I though! I had a previous experience with an EDF meter that when a debit of about 7-8£ was reached, the electricity was simply cut out.
Today I receive a "prepayment final electricity statement" from EDF asking for 43.18£! The letter is addressed to "Owner/Occupier from 30/09/2011 to 13/11/2011".
Both estimated and actual readings are slightly wrong as I took myself note of them on 9/11/11 (when a change in tariff prices was made) and 13/11/11 (last day of their supply). The bill does not report any top ups made even if I have recorded to have made them on 4/10/11, 20/10/11, 7/11/11.
I had simply used their key till the EDF credit run out, an EDF meter inspector came also to my place and checked that the meter and tariff applied was correct. I do not owe anything to EDF! Why this criminal request now after 14 months from the switch?!
I do not hold those receipts and neither their December '12 letter stating that there was nothing to pay (I found the correspondence they were sending me just of hilarious content and trashed it). What do you recommend to do? They do not hold my name, neither if I was the "Owner/Occupier from 30/09/2011 to 13/11/2011", shell I just ignore their letters?

They won't be able to contact you now by the looks of it.
We had similar after moving house with British Gas (you haven't paid your bills for 6 months, 6 months after moving sort), and whilst it took them a while to sort out, when someone finally realised it wasn't us, although they couldn't take the bill off the account, did remove our names and phone numbers, updating Experian.
Never heard from them since
