My friend wants to get a new phone so they can use whatsapp to keep in contact with their friends in a different country ( all friends have it).
That's basically all they want it for so nothing too expensive. Would like it to have wifi. Can anyone suggest?

Huawei Ascend G300 for a budget Android smartphone? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If it is primary phone, I suggest you get one of those at £100 range. IMO, I find the screen of those £50 range phones are too small and thus I keep entering wrong letter0

Lots of older phones can use it - including Nokia (not the windows ones)0

When buying PAYG they usually require top up bought as well. My friend wants to keep her (PAYG virgin) phone number. How can she do this without wasting money on credit for a sim card she won't use.0 -
