I would dread it if my IT guy who has just installed my son's (no longer required XP machine) in our house read this but:-
Once it was installed I surfer for 10 hrs!. Finally I turned the computer off and the power supply. This morning nothing. The two blue tv's were there, but no page could be brought to life. I asked him back as he's a neighbour. He told me that because I'd turned of the power supply, the Safecom router had in effect lost the details, ie user name & password (as supplied by talktalk). Under no circumstances should the router be turned off, ie power supply.
We established that there were spaces where the username/password should be, re-entered them and hey presto., on line with a connection. I felt dreadfull thinking that because I'd turned off the power I'd introduced this problem.
I enquired why it was then that I have used this procedure previously with my '98 and the Speedtouch modem, but don't think I understood his reply. So, after he'd gone I decided to tape over the switch to avoid accidently turning the power off.
BUT, I had information. I'm not sure if this is correct though. But it has been suggested that it might have been that he failed to SAVE the username & password when he was installing. Does this make sense and what would you do.

I turn my router off everytime i am not using it. i havent lost my settings yet. when you first set up the router you have to save the settings though if you dont then it may explain why you lost the information.0

Your username/password were stored on your PC when using the Speedtouch modem but now they will be stored in the router. Routers are designed to be left on 24/7, so leave it on. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

There should be no problem turning a router off. I suspect he forgot to save the settings to the router. I turn my routers off every night0

A router doesn't need installing just setting up. As the other posts have said it is likely the settings have not been saved. Turn ours off at the switch 'most' nights, no problemNudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0

islandman has suffered from connection problems using his previous set-up with a USB modem, so now that he has at last got a router, he may as well leave it connected as there is no point switching it off. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Espresso, fancy you remembering about my problems. I certainly had an impact on you (lol). I left the power on last night and felt uncomfortable about it, but I don't suppose it's any different from forgetting to turn the power off for the tv/video/freeview etc.
On the subject of my months of intermittant connections problems, or rather my computer's..................I am still holding my breath and can't believe it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
