Hi all
I'm trying to my first backup with Macrium Reflect (the free version) and I've hit a snag.
I've selected Image all local drives on this computer (which gives me a system restore partition of 100MB - 24.5MB used and drive C: which is 931.41GB - 128.73GB used).
I've done the default actions and it's giving me the following error:-
Backup aborted! - Unable to read from disk - Error Code 23 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
I get the feeling I'm doing something dim but can't see it.
The backup drive is an external had-drive with 1.19TB free.
Does anyone know what this error actually means in English?

run
chkdsk /f
on all drives
eg
chkdsk whateveryourusbdriveis: /F
chkdsk c: /F (will need a reboot)!!

I've managed to find instructions so Macrium will ignore bad sectors and the back up is now running.
While it's running it's actually finding quite a lot of bad sectors so it looks like I need a new HDD.
The bad sectors seem to be in groups as well, is that normal?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

if there is physical damage, quite possibly
suggest you do a chkdsk and a second backup without the ignore errors afterwards, and create the macrium rescue cd.!!

I'll let this finish (currently sat at 34 hours to go) and then do the chkdsk /f.
There should be no physical damage as the computer hasn't been moved since I built it.
Creating the rescue disc is also on my list of things to do.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

thats a long time for usb2 or 3 unless you are backing up empty clusters? (could be down to the erroring)
should do over 100GB/hour.!!

It didn't actually take that long (I think it was just estimating because of the bad sectors).
I ran the chkdsk c: /f and it found 76kb in bad sectors. It didn't do anything with them (according to the on-screen text) but when I tried to rerun the back-up it gave the same error.
I'll be looking for a new SATA HDD later to replace my current one just in case, but I'm curious at why the chkdsk c: /f didn't do anything tio help.
Any ideas?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

I guess if they are physical disk errors then there's nothing it CAN do (except mark them as bad sectors so Windows doesn't try to use them).0

Just been on to Seagate about the HDDF and apparently it didn't come with a warranty.
From the email I recevied from one of their support staff:-
"I apologize for the troubles you are having with your drive. Unfortunately your drive never had a warranty. The company E-Buyer sold you a drive that has a status as being a promotional devise. This means the drive was given to the company by a sales rep. They should have never sold this drive. Please contact E-Buyer with this issue."
So, where do I stand now?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

That's an unusual get out, what were they expecting ebuyer to do with it other than sell it like any other sales sweetener
If the drive is new, contact ebuyer but you need to run a drive fitness test first -

did you do the /F on the chkdsk and reboot?!!

Use the /r switch.
chkdsk c: /r/r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. The disk must be locked.0
