If your want your benefit paying there going to need to know what account to put it in!

Also generally if you need the help you jump through the hoops to get it, unless you have something to hide.

As for the legality I believe they can ask for whatever they deem necessary to check your entitlement.

They need to check you have declared all your capital.

Your husband has a clear choice - give the requested information, or find another way to pay the rent.

You do know that they can find the information anyway, if they have a reason to doubt your claim? The DWP and HMRC can do the same.
  • The choice is open up a new bank account - basic one just to have that money paid in or use the one he now has. New account would be a hassle though surely - what with ID theft so rampant in Wales - Hacking is only something that happens when you use on line services and do not protect your PC/Laptop/Phone from key loggers - So filling in a paper form is unlikely to be the source of hacking.
  • Don't you ever pay for bills using direct debits? What about paying for items over the Internet or in shops using your debit card? Aren't you worried doing those things will get your account hacked?

If you don't give your bank details it may cause a delay with your claim, you could say you don't have a bank account if you really are that worried a council official will hack your account or the postie might steal your form with the intention of hacking, but that will raise all sorts of questions, how do you get your benefits paid etc, they will want proof you get paid in ways other than into a bank account, in the mean time your arrears are building up, you start to get warnings from the housing company, all because you are worried about putting your bank details on an official form.

Hacking nowadays usually only occurs on line, and even then it's because people are silly enough to click a link sent to them in an email stating their account has been suspended please put your account details in to reinstate it.

On line banking is very secure nowadays and I know all banks are different but it takes forever for me to get onto my account what with the password then picking the right letters from a drop down menu for my secret word.

The bottom line is you have to give all the information asked or delay or even lose the benefit.

You generally have to submit bank account statements as proof of income in any event so putting it on the forms really doesn't matter. The same information you are asked for is the same information that you have on a cheque. As an aside, one time I had my HB suspended until I submitted bank statements for myself and my partner. :-)
