Is Java safe to Install

Still not fully safe, browser makers e.g. mozilla are releasing plugins to prevent problem escalation. Oracle says thay are working hard on the fix

My recommendation is that having Java installed on your computer to run Java programmes is fine.

However, I would recommend disabling the Java plug-in on your web browser. Only re-enable it if you encounter a web site that needs Java (and there aren't many of those any more), and only then if you trust the web site.

Oracle keep releasing patches for java, and the hackers keep finding new security flaws in it. So even with the latest version, there's no guarantee you're safe.

I had the warning this morning from Avast, to update. I did using Java from control panel,to 7.11, ok.

Are you sure you have any programs on your PC/laptop that actually need Java to run?

If not, uninstall it.
Come to that, uninstall it anyway - you can always reinstall it easily if some program objects to its absence.

Funnily enough I just uninstalled Java on my PC this morning, after I came to the same conclusion as you. Its a security problem and it is just wasting resources, slowing your PC down and wasting your time asking to update to the latest version, so unless you really need it for something specific, you may as well get rid of it.
