Tidy up the stickies?

Options
Inspired by a post on Praise vent and warnings, isn't it time to tidy up these stickies? There are nine stickies, which means that you have to scroll down just to see the new threads.

With the exception of the excellent How to speed up a slow or infected PC thread, they have all devolved into pointless discussions and are no help at all to a newbie looking for info.

For example, Who is going to wade through 2500 posts on security

May I suggest:
  • Keeping the How to speed up stickie
  • A stickie to the free software link on the main site that i can never find easily - this includes virus scanners
  • Unstickieing the rest and letting them naturally fall off the bottom of the thread list

I don't see a problem tidying up the stickes, but I would like to see the speed-up and security stickies left in place, but with a change.
Keep the most recent info on the stickies and lock them.

The admins (or whoever) can update them as new info becomes available, but lock them for general discussion purposes.

Been here before, but only a minor tidy happened

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3402497

The speedup sticky does get updated from time to time, which won't happen if it's locked. It too will be of less relevance as time goes by

I think the FAQ one, if unlocked or replaced, or turned into a sub forum, could be a place for all the answers to common questions

    eg

I'm selling my pc how do I wipe it securely
    How do I backup properly
How do I cleanup a virus infection
My clock is not keeping the time/cmos battery replacement
My pc won't boot, what do i do
I've lost all my data, how can I recover it.
    The pound sign isn't working
    My cd/dvd drive isn't working, upperfilters/itunes
My disk is running out of space, how do i clean it up
    Freeview/freesat/aerials
    homeplugs/wireless/encryption
    internet speed problems

    Pointless post is pointless. :T

On a tablet (and more so on a phone) the number of stickies is onerous.
  • In my experience people still post problems as new threads even though the answer is easily found in the stickies. Many don't even notice the stickies are there.

I do check and maintain the links in the Online Virus Scanner sticky (in fact this thread just reminded me I needed to do it) but not my call as to its value.

Must be the one you use then, no problems on the phones or tabs i use.

Some people are just not happy, unless they have a whine about something.

Closed - I didn't mean permanentaly locked, just locked for discussions (if that makes sense). The same with the security one.

Lock it for normal viewing, but if it needs updating then it can be and then lock it again so you can't get questions on it instead of in a new thread.

Don't know if that's possible, unless I try and contact a board guide every time.

Or get some sort of semi-admin(?) access?
