Really smelly colleague, unsure what to do!

Why don't you all chip in & by him a toiletry set complete with deodorant, body wash, toothpaste & mouthwash! It's a very subtle hint but could work better then being so upfront0

I wouldnt because its the job of the line manager to be having a word with the man directly.Thats what they get paid for.Its not for the staff to be dealing with it etc. Its also not a subtle hint getting him toiletries its like saying, you stink get a wash, theres no difference.
O.P needs to voice their concerns to the line manager and then leave it for them to deal with.End of story.0 -

He's a young lad, a student, and only does 2 days a week, but he has been getting worse and worse in the BO dept, and his clothes even smell musty, and his teeth are yellow, which consequently means he has really bad breath! Now, none of us want to hurt his feelings but if we can smell it surely customers can as well!? How are we to approach it? Our manager (female) has refused to tackle it, saying it would be better coming from another man! Help
Sorry but your manager refusing to deal with it just isn't good enough, its her job!Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Yeah but christmas has now passed, so it would be out of context unless someone said they got a gift set but it was unwanted etc. Then the man that stinks could say that he was being picked on bullied etc.
If the manager who was supposed to deal with it refused as you say O.P,then you have two choices.Ask her again outlining its her job to do it or go above her head to the next person up.0 -

Agreed. The bloke in question could just be a scruffy b but he could also have other issues."It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice." :T0 -
This sort of thing was usually done by the famous memo to all staff. You know the sort of thing. "Memo re: policy regarding staff personal appearance. It is the policy of XYZ for all staff to be presentable etc. etc. We would remind all staff etc. etc..."
No one picked out and usually solved the problem.
Maybe cannot do that sort of thing now.
Cannot really tell manager what to do though if they have not worked out how to do it, but you could say that it is interferring with your work and that you used to love work but hate it now with having to work with the smell. Maybe then they will figure it out.0 -
If he only does 2 days a week ask NOT to be put on the same shifts
If you can set him up with a GF than sometimes works.
If he lives at home phone his mum0 -

Not good ideas, 2 and 3 could end up getting the OP the sack for harrassment.0 -

That counts as subtlety in your world? What do you do when you want to be blunt? Get an ad in the paper?0
