Really smelly colleague, unsure what to do!

I have a bit of a sensitive one here and really need advice on how to approach it, we work in a retail environment, and one of our part time staff is getting increasingly unkempt and frankly a bit whiffy! He's a young lad, a student, and only does 2 days a week, but he has been getting worse and worse in the BO dept, and his clothes even smell musty, and his teeth are yellow, which consequently means he has really bad breath! Now, none of us want to hurt his feelings but if we can smell it surely customers can as well!? How are we to approach it? Our manager (female) has refused to tackle it, saying it would be better coming from another man! Help :eek:

    You just have to do it, go up and ask if there is a problem with his bathroom and say you have to be presentable to work there and it has been noticed he is not up to scratch. some places I have worked you would have got a regimental bath for being dirty.

  • Best to take them to one side and just front it out. Probably is best for it to come from another male as well.

    It is not your job as a colleague. It should be handled by a manager.

    Not their job but may come across better from a colleague, especially if there is any rapport there.

    Until a complaint is put in for workplace bullying etc.

  • A manager should manage the situation, it's what the pay/grade has to do.

    Unless another employee is bestest buds with them, sees them outside of work etc (and can approach it so it's not really obvious people have been colluding), then it's best coming from a manager to avoid the bullying problem arising.

    It is the managers responsibilty to make sure the staff are well presented and I would not do it if I was you as you could be told off for doing so as you have no responibility to do this and you are not in charge, are you?

    You could be pointed out for bullying like said here.
